POSITION AVAILABLE: Landscape Irrigation Standards and Codes Technical Advisor

This position reports to the government and public affairs director and exists to support the irrigation industry through overseeing the development of industry standards and codes that benefit and promote efficient landscape irrigation technologies, products and services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Track irrigation standard development affecting the landscape irrigation industry by organizations such as ASABE, ASTM, ISO and ASHRAE, among others.
  • Serve as primary liaison to the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, driving efforts in identifying and developing new standards for efficient irrigation technologies.
  • Track code development affecting the commercial and residential sectors of the irrigation industry.
  • Serve as an advisor to code development organizations, including ICC, IAPMO, RESNET and HERS-H2O, among others.
  • Coordinate irrigation industry volunteer efforts in standards and codes development, including orchestrating IA volunteer placements on key codes committees.
  • In partnership with IA professional staff, advise regulatory entities, such as WaterSense and the California Energy Commission, among others, regarding best management practices and irrigation technology performance.
  • Advise IA professional staff on technical questions regarding irrigation technologies.
  • Review/edit existing IA publications and PowerPoints relevant to current standards and codes practices.
  • Provide regular reports and leadership to the IA Standards and Codes Committee.
  • Assist the government and public affairs director in the development of legislative and regulatory proposals promoting efficient irrigation.

Minimum Qualifications: Four-year degree in irrigation or an engineering-related field. At least 10 years of experience in the irrigation or related industry. Strong background in turf-landscape irrigation. Excellent verbal and written communications. Must be organized, self-motivated, efficient and detail-oriented. Proficient in Microsoft Office products.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in working with volunteers, associations or non-profits a plus.

Time Commitment: 12 to 15 hours per month, preferably during regular office hours: 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Eastern.

Other: Some travel may be required to the Irrigation Association headquarters or industry-related events.

Compensation: A monthly retainer of $1,250, payable on the first of each month

Requirements of Advisor: A detailed timesheet submitted by the 10th of each month to IA Finance Director Rebecca Bayless and copied to the government affairs director, including hours worked and activities monitored. Hours cannot exceed 15 per month without advance permission. Though some months may require more hours than others, the total hours over a six-month period must be between 72 and 90.
