EPA releases spray sprinkler bodies specification
Sprinkler manufacturers can apply to have their products labeled by WaterSense
FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA (Sept. 25, 2017) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released its final specification for spray sprinkler bodies. Manufacturers that produce spray sprinkler bodies meeting the efficiency and performance criteria can apply to have their products certified to earn the WaterSense label. Retailers and distributors selling these products are also eligible to partner with WaterSense. Spray sprinkler bodies now join weather-based irrigation controllers as an irrigation technology labeled by WaterSense.
The final specification for spray sprinkler bodies is similar to the draft specification released at the Irrigation Show and Education Conference in November 2016. It tightens the requirements for labeling by requiring that the maximum deviation is 12 percent (instead of 15 percent), with 10 percent across all the test pressures. With this specification, the EPA is following ASABE/ICC 802-2014 standard for how products need to be marked and labeled. WaterSense labeling will have to be on the product and in all product literature.
The Irrigation Association and the Smart Water Application Technologies initiative have worked closely with WaterSense during the development of this specification. As noted by the EPA, spray sprinkler bodies with integral pressure regulation could save a home as much as 5,600 gallons of water annually.

This year, the IA has also continued its push for the congressional authorization of the WaterSense program. Outreach to the administration and Congress will continue as Congress considers numerous bills that include WaterSense authorization.
