CID Overview

Certified Irrigation Designers develop irrigation system designs for residential, commercial and golf course applications. They demonstrate expertise in:

  • Evaluating site conditions, water availability and irrigation requirements
  • Selecting appropriate irrigation equipment, materials and design methods
  • Designing efficient, cost-effective irrigation systems
  • Preparing construction plans, specifications and irrigation schedules
  • Supporting proper installation and system performance

How to become a Certified Irrigation Designer

1. Prepare for the exams

A minimum of three years of irrigation-related experience or education in an irrigation-related field is recommended before taking the General Landscape/Turf and specialty exams.

2. Pass the General Landscape/Turf exam

The four-hour multiple-choice exam includes 150 questions covering:

  • Equipment
  • Hydraulics
  • Scheduling
  • Layout
  • Electrical
  • Maintenance
  • Operations

3. Pass a Landscape Specialty exam

Complete one four-hour specialty exam in either:

  • Golf course irrigation
  • Residential/commercial landscape irrigation

Candidates may not take both the General Landscape/Turf Exam and a specialty exam on the same day.

4. Maintain your certification

To remain certified, you must:

  • Follow the Select Certified Code of Ethics.
  • Earn 20 continuing education credits every 2 years.
  • Pay the annual certification renewal fee.
