Certified Irrigation Contractor
Overview
Certified irrigation contractors install, maintain and repair irrigation systems. CICs:
- Execute irrigation projects to meet all specifications and requirements.
- Prepare installation sites, including layout, staking, excavation, boring, trenching, grading and back-filling.
- Cut and join pipe, know the limitations of different piping systems and understand basic hydraulics.
- Lay out and install piping and water delivery components; backflow prevention components; mechanical, hydraulic and electrical irrigation controls; and other irrigation system components.
- Troubleshoot and repair irrigation components and systems.
- Understand good business practices; construction contracts and their legal rights and obligations; and licensing laws and codes in their state.
Program Requirements
Certified irrigation contractors must:
- Demonstrate a minimum of three years of irrigation-related experience and education.
- Pass a written exam on general irrigation and specialty topics.
- Agree to follow the Code of Ethics established by the IA Certification Board.
- Remain in good standing by submitting 10 continuing education units and a nominal renewal fee each year.
Certification Process
To become a CIC, you must:
- Submit an application. Minimum requirement: three years of irrigation-related field experience.
- Pass the irrigation contractor exam. The 4-hour exam includes 180 multiple choice questions on irrigation design, irrigation installation, water conservation/irrigation scheduling, codes and laws, equipment and terminology, general business knowledge and maintenance.
CIC exams are offered in multiple locations throughout the year.
