Did you know we’ve got influence?
Each summer, the Irrigation Foundation helps advance the health and vitality of the irrigation industry by mentoring well-educated, impassioned individuals at the Irrigation Faculty Academy. Educators from colleges and universities across the country are invited to attend this two-day event where they network and learn about irrigation-related curriculum. Attendees also provide the Foundation with valuable insight on student recruitment opportunities and challenges.
“Faculty Academy is an excellent education program with a hands-on approach to learning, up-to-date content, and resources that I can take back to use in the classroom,” said Claire Ehrlinger, a faculty member at Mira Costa College in Oceanside, California. “Networking with other instructors and developing contacts in the irrigation industry is the icing on the cake.”
Previous academies have included industry tours and sessions on:
- Agriculture sprinkler systems
- Basic hydraulics
- Basic pumps
- Electrical troubleshooting
- Irrigation components
- Variable rates for center pivots
Between 2011 and 2016, 128 educators participated in Irrigation Faculty Academies. These instructors taught over 1,500 courses to almost 35,000 students over the same time period, dramatically increasing the Foundation’s impact and influence on irrigation curriculums nationwide.
Each year the Foundation hosts both agriculture and landscape versions of its Irrigation Faculty Academy. The two academies will allow educators from both the agricultural and turf and landscape sectors to learn about irrigation techniques and resources for their specific fields.
There is no charge to attend the Irrigation Faculty Academy, although instructors are responsible for travel, hotel and other expenses. To help offset these costs, the Foundation offers partial grants to as many instructors as possible. Donor dollars make the event possible and, in previous years, have provided nearly $40,000 in travel assistance to instructors who otherwise would not have been able to attend.
