Certified Irrigation Contractor
Certification Process
To become a certified irrigation contractor, you must:
- Submit an application. Minimum requirement: three years of irrigation-related field experience.
- Pass the irrigation contractor exam. The 4-hour exam includes 180 multiple choice questions on irrigation design, irrigation installation, irrigation scheduling, federal codes and laws, equipment and terminology, general business knowledge and maintenance. Beginning November 5, 2011, the CIC exam will be a closed-book exam with 150 equally weighted questions. Candidates will have three and a half hours to complete the exam.
- Comply with the Code of Ethics.
- Remain in good standing. As of Jan. 1, 2011, CICs must submit 20 continuing education units per 2-year cycle to remain in good standing. For details on CEU requirements, click here.

Exam cancellations must be made in writing at least five business days prior to the exam date. Cancellations made after this date will be assessed a cancellation fee. If a candidate fails to appear on the day of exam, the candidate will forfeit all application and exam fees and will not be eligible for a refund.
