CAWM Overview

Certified agriculture water managers evaluate, operate, manage and improve agriculture irrigation systems to achieve the highest level of water conservation possible. CAWMs:

  • Assess the specific crop water requirements, water availability and quality.
  • Have working knowledge of general irrigation theory, including hydraulics , soil-plant-water relationships, system uniformity and efficiency.
  • Understand irrigation equipment selection, use and installation methods.
  • Evaluate existing irrigation systems and make repairs and operational improvements to increase water and energy conservation.
  • Understanding of related elements including grading and drainage and chemigation.

Program Requirements

Certified agriculture water managers must:

  • Demonstrate a minimum of three years of irrigation-related experience.
  • Pass a written exam on irrigation water management topics, including scheduling, site and system evaluation, irrigation systems, water quality and management, chemigation and economics.
  • Agree to follow the Code of Ethics established by the IA Certification Board.
  • All CAWMs must submit 20 continuing education units per 2-year cycle to remain in good standing. For details on CEU requirements, click here.
